Stanley

The Stanley
When I was a kid the Stanley was a Famous Players movie house.
I must have seen lots of movies there over the years.
The only one I recall specifically is Apocalypse Now.
Dolby Surround Sound would have been the latest rage at the time.
The sound of helicopters moving from the back of the theatre to the front was downright startling.
And apparently memorable.
The Stanley is a live theatre now.

Green Building

Van Dusen Botanical Gardens
Here we have the new reception centre at Van Dusen Botanical Gardens.
The building is rated very green (LEED Platinum).
It features a green roof, grey water recycling, solar water heaters, photovoltaic panels, rammed earth walls, B.C.lumber and so on and so forth.
More importantly, it has a nice little café.

Old Bank

906 Main
This Bank Of Montreal branch closed and was mostly vacant for eons.
It's a 'listed' building so a condo complex had to build around it.
In recent years it's had one or two tenants.
I think it's a blue jeans store c/w coffee shop now.

Holy Rosary Cathedral

Holy Rosary
I don't pretend to know one Gothic style from another.
If you believe Wiki, and who doesn't, this is the French Gothic style.

Neo-Vancouver Special

_DSC7297
The ubiquitous 'Vancouver Special'  was a house style built between '65 and '85.
If I were choosing I'd take the original version over these built quite recently.

Belkin Gallery

Belkin Gallery
UBC has a multitude of buildings in a plethora of styles.
The Morris and Helen Belkin Gallery is probably my favourite.

Landmark

Granville and 12th
Douglas Lodge was built in 1912.
I doubt many Vancouverites know the name of the building.
I didn't until I read the heritage plaque.

Wing Sang 1889

Wing Sang 1889
Unless I'm mistaken I've posted images of this building before.
It was renovated not long ago by realtor Bob Rennie and houses his art gallery and offices.

In The Clouds

Shaangri-la, Vancouver, B.C.
At some point, part way up this tower, the Shangi-la ceases to be an expensive hotel and becomes an expensive condo.
The more expensive the condos the more likely the view could be obscured by clouds.

If it hadn't been raining I'd have taken a little more time and tried to include the weather vane that sits on top of the dome.

Downtown Providence, RI

This Providence building drew me like a magnet every time I passed.
It's got a cool name too, One Turks Head Place.

There's hardly any gum stuck to it yet.

Field House

The new field house at Trillium Park.
We could use more colourful buildings in Lotusland.

I'm in NYC but due to severe internet disruptions at the hotel I don't think I'll be able to upload pics for current posts. We'll have to settle for the post already in the bag.
Things should be OK once I get to Boston tomorrow.

Deadline Looming

The highly controversial and outrageously expensive (at least $563,000,000,00) renovations to B.C. Place Stadium aren't finished yet.
Once completed, by Sept. 30, this will be the most photographed building in Vancouver.
Mark my words!
