Green Building

Van Dusen Botanical Gardens
Here we have the new reception centre at Van Dusen Botanical Gardens.
The building is rated very green (LEED Platinum).
It features a green roof, grey water recycling, solar water heaters, photovoltaic panels, rammed earth walls, B.C.lumber and so on and so forth.
More importantly, it has a nice little café.

School Days

_DSC4455
I started taking, Digital Intermediate Photography, on Tuesday.
Now I have homework!
'Use manual focus, use spot metering, use single point focus, bracket, look for details …. '
'Images may not be Photoshopped.'
So much for just bumbling along.
Watch this space for more night school rejects.

Deco Style

The only flourish on an otherwise fairly frumpy apartment building.

Griffins

The gargoyles and griffins are prominent features on the Hotel Vancouver. I remember teachers bringing them to our attention when I was in high school.

And I haven't remembered much from high school.

There are two or three restaurants in the hotel. The restaurant most frequented by us 'commoners' is called Griffins.

Built Like A Brick Schoolhouse

I've pointed out in previous posts that many of Vancouver's schools have stood the test of time. Whether this is due more to good maintenance or highly durable construction I can't really say. Possibly equal parts of both.

The original section of Lord Strathcona Elementary was built in 1891 and is still in daily use. I've walked by many times and even taken pictures before but it was only last week that I noticed the fan detail under eave.

Modern architecture is all fine and dandy but they don't (and can't) build them like this any more.

The Marine Building

All the best in 2009!

Let's take a break from the snow.

Some time ago I posted a mirrored view of the Marine building.  Chuck and Sharon had seen the building in person and possibly others have as well.

Back in October I walked by and took these detail shots. Frankly, all the ornamentation in the entry needs a good cleaning. I happened to bump into the chief engineer, who I know, but didn't think to give him a hard time about the dirt.

If I knew how to display these shots in a more compact manner I would, but I don't so I can't.
