Some cities employ 'pay and display' street parking (one or two machines per block).

Vancouver is still more or less in the dark ages. Parking meters line the streets.
Although it's possible to pay using cell phones I think most people 'plug the meter' with coins. 

The coins have to be collected frequently by city workers.

Some new meters may accept credit cards but I'm not up to speed on the technology.

I still can't tell you whether they're selling diamonds, condos, make-up or ?

Hello Sailor

The Russian Navy missile cruiser Varyag was in town. Apparently on a shopping expedition. 

She sailed on the 11th but not before her crew joined the Remembrance Day ceremonies.

It's really time the city did away with these things. They always look untidy and some would have become projectiles during the riot. There is a unit that can replace them but it's not in wide use so far.
