Life In The Big City

As mentioned in earlier posts, Southlands is within the city boundaries.

Azalea Drive

A Southlands estate, or mini estate. I don't actually know how big a place has to be to qualify as an estate.

Grazing

Look closely to see the horse, with a handler, getting a free lunch down in Southlands.

More of pics from Southlands coming up.

Fore!

McCleery Golf Course is one of four, cute huh?, four, fore!. Never mind.

McCleery is a city run public course. The other three are private courses. I don't play golf and I'll save my opinion of the game for another day. That sentence alone was probably enough to alienate dozens of people.

That, for now, is the end of our Southlands tour. But not without a tractor pic and an old wagon just for Boise Diva.

Shipyards

This is what remains of a much larger group of ship building and ship repair outfits located for years along this section of the North Arm of the Fraser River.

As far as I know these buildings are slated for demolition eventually. Some people live here and others have studios of one kind or another. I didn't find anyone to talk to and I ventured into to the property fully aware of 'private property' signs.

So much of the history of British Columbia is connected with the river that it is absolutely inconceivable to me that these landmarks would be torn down so a few well heeled people can have a riverfront home.

The land is owned by the Musqueam First Nation and they have decided to develop it.

Celtic is gone now

The Mighty Fraser

Lulu Island is the largest island in the Fraser River. The river divides at the eastern tip of Lulu Island and becomes the North and South Arms of the Fraser which then empties into the Strait of Georgia, a.k.a. the Pacific Ocean. This is the North Arm.

Horse owners in Southlands know this trail and some cyclists find their way here but it seems hardly used. This path is quite new and is the result of the demolition of most of the shipyard buildings which fronted on this part of the river. I'm upset about the demolition. It's more history gone forever in favour of building lots which will sell for $700,000.00 each. There was opposition to removing the old buildings but it was not successful.

Tomorrow I'll show part of what is left of the shipyards.

A while back I went into a rant about signs directed at idiots. Along the trail I saw signs which, in my opinion, were written by idiots.

This is the very reason I wear a hockey helmet whenever I leave the house.

Country Bumpkin

You can believe it or not but this is Vancouver, about 20 minutes on transit from my place. I'm a stubble-jumper at heart.

Southlands is a neighbourhood with more horses than people as far as I can tell. Owners board their horses and come to ride and train them here.

Southlands has two golf courses on the east and two on the west and the Fraser River on the south. Apologies for the poor quality of the photo below. As I have proven before, I can't photograph anything that moves.

More Southlands tomorrow and the next day and the day after that.

A beautiful horse. The rider was cute too.
