Lighthouse

A few weeks ago I was visiting friends in West Van and on my way I took a detour into Lighthouse Park. It's a fairly energetic hike out to the light and since I huffed and puffed my way there and back I'm using the photo no matter how so-so it might be. I was hoping for a more dramatic sunset, however I didn't want to hang around too long and have to try to find my way out in the dark.

This is the Point Atkinson Light near the entrance to English Bay. The point of land across the bay is Point Grey and on the tip of that point is UBC.

When we were kids our granddad was sometimes able to finagle his way into this place or that. Somehow he knew the light keepers here and got my brothers and I in for an up-close tour. We climbed up to the the light and stood outside on the deck. And got to pump the hand-powered foghorn (used in case of a power outage).

What a great memory. I'll bet that was some big time fun for you and your brothers. I think Granddads are born being able to finagle into places!

This photo was worth the huffing and puffing. It looks like you are far from the city. Just beautiful. How did you hang onto this one so long???

How pretty! One of the other blogs I follow posted about this lighthouse not too long ago at http://nostalgiatodayandyesterday.blogspot.com/2009/02/pt-atkinson-lighthouse.html

I think it's a great shot and with the added pleasure of your childhood memory of a visit making it even more special.

Your grand dad & my dad had a lot in common. In addition to freighters, he could get us tours of lighthouses. Always wanted to live in one. I quite like this shot.

My heart gave a leap when I saw this photo! I am so jealous that you had the opportunity to go to the top . . . No, actually I'm delighted to know that someone did get to climb up even if it wasn't this year. And Lois, I'm astounded that you remembered my blog post! How endearing!
