Street Trees

This is a fairly typical Vancouver residential street. Not all streets are tree lined but it's very common.

It's pretty but there is a downside. These mature trees have extensive root systems which sometimes play havoc with sidewalks. In some of the worst cases the sidewalks have become obstacle courses in spite of the efforts of city crews.

There are 130,000 trees planted along Vancouver Streets. Even though more than 1000 dead or diseased trees can be removed each year, 3500 trees are planted annually.

South Pas is a tree city, too. Both Pasadena and South Pasadena are arbor cities. Petrea over at Pasadena Daily Photo recently posted about how many trees are planted in Pasadena and the number was huge!

I know all about those root systems. They wound their way into our sewer line and backed it up. Yikes!

I love being around so many trees. I think I'm part Druid.

Great colours! We don't have them around here... it seems summer is Back!

The other downside of tree-lined streets is that if you park underneath the trees your car is bombed by our feathered friends.

Gorgeous autumn colours there, I like this view a lot.

One of my favorite things as a kid was riding my bike on wavy brick sidewalks, made by all those huge tree roots.

Better to hassle with the roots than to live without these beauties. Boy, they're stunning.
