Heavy Industry

LaFarge Cement is the most visible, by far, remnant of the Granville Island's industrial history.

Until a few years ago this was called Ocean Cement so I guess there was a take-over or amalgamation.

Barges loaded with gravel (sorry gravel barge fans, no pics today) tie up to the plant on the water side. Fleets of trucks are constantly operating from here. I suppose the arrangement must be satisfactory but bringing these trucks on to the island is no picnic for the company or the truck drivers. Granville Island can be, and usually is, a traffic zoo. It tends to get quite snarled up. Way too many people bring cars on to the island. I'm dead set against it myself but nobody cares what I think.

Funny they would keep there. Do they have other incentives? Tax breaks maybe?

I dimly remember this place. Many of Granville's streets are so narrow I wonder how the gravel trucks get through. But then tour busses manage it.

A change from Alfred E. Newman to Dudley Do-right, if my guess is correct? Wayne, you have the best set of avatars on the web.

Oh my ex was in the gravel, concrete, etc. business. Nevermind, you don't want to go there and neither do I! Thanks W, for dredging up those "fond" memories!!

PS BOB is absolutely right. Your avatars put us all to shame. What next is all I can wonder.
