What's wrong with this picture?Well, Vancouverites, or a segment of them, are goofy enough to sit out on patios, in the middle of winter, in shorts and sandals. Of course they have huge gas-fired heaters blasting away to try to keep them warm. So, I was surprised to see this patio, on Commercial Drive, apparently closed up on a fairly warm day. They are hard to see but this patio has heaters.
Am I the only one who finds this bizarre? Trying to heat the outdoors when some people can barely afford to heat their homes. When we're worried about carbon emissions and a fuel shortage?

Nice to see a shot of Commercial Drive - I often used to visit my mother who lived near there for some years. Yes, the outdoor heaters thing is a little weird - probably originally designed for smokers though now I don't think they are allowed even on patios/terraces. Paris Daily also has a post about this (November 17)
Oh I totally agree with you - if I ever get a patio heater just shoot me. What a load of nonsense - heating the outdoors? The world's gone mad!
You make a very good point, Wayne. Those heaters are common in Los Angeles area restaurants because so many have huge outdoor seating areas because while days are nice year round it is uncomfortable to dine outside when it's in the upper 50s to low 60s -- which is common at night in the Winter months. I'd never really thought about the waste of fuel, but it does seem bizarre now that I really think about it.
Your post reminds me of when I spent some time in Chicago and people would wear shorts and go swimming in Lake Michegan in March when it was about 40 degrees outside.

Some people amaze me with their year-round shorts and sandals. I remember asking someone about it, and they said the cold didn't feel uncomfortable. Simple as that, I guess. Benjamin beat me to the Paris Daily Photo post about this very question.

I take your point about the patio heaters. We have them here too. It does seem ironic but I guess restaurants want to maximise seating and not have space doing nothing. Then there's the no smoking thing...
I see your point and agree with you. Some places here have outdoors heatings too and you can also find them in many european cities.
Yes, I find this bizarre. There's been a big explosion of them (I wish) in Scotland since smoking was banned in indoor public places. So many customers are retreating to patios to smoke with their drink or meal that these heaters are now very common.
