It varies gallery by gallery Bob. There would be a fairly ludicrous irony if you weren't allowed to take pictures in a show by a photographer.
This gallery had no prohibition on photographs which is the practical approach since everyone has a camera in their phone. The Pace Gallery had a Picasso exhibition and they didn't permit photos.
If they don't permit photos you have to try not to get caught. :-)
