I'm curious to know how many CDP cities have an idling by-law. Vancouver's has been on the books for two years. I hope the signs have only been posted for a couple of weeks because I've only noticed them for a couple of weeks.
No engine idling for longer than 3 minutes (it will be 2 minutes when I'm mayor). There are fines for violators but, of course, we hope for voluntary compliance. Trying to nab offenders seems like a non-starter. Is that a pun?

I laughed when I first saw this -- you mean those wacky Vancouver folks have to be productive all the time!? Now that I have read the rest of it, and your explanation, I have to say that once again the Canadians have it all over the US. As far as I know, there is no such thing in California. We idle half the time we're on the freeway.
Nothing here that I'm aware of.
I bet a lot of people took this sign to mean something else...like a weird way of saying "no loitering." We don't have laws, but I see signs reminding people not to "idle" near buildings because system heating and cooling intakes are nearby.

Doesn't an engine use more fuel and spit out more emissions in the start up process? Perhaps that's just when it's cold. (It doesn't get cold in Vancouver does it? ;-) )

Laurie, There has been a rivalry between Toronto and Vancouver forever. Basically Torontonians think we're bone lazy, that we have no real work ethic and that we all take Friday afternoons off. Most of it's probably true.
So a prohibition on 'idling' may be in order.
Bit, According to the Suzuki Foundation, http://www.davidsuzuki.org/default.asp, idling an engine more than 10 seconds consumes more fuel than restarting it.
Vancouver never gets very cold and we don't have block heater plugs. In Canadian cities where it does get all cold, i.e. all the others, there are block heater plugs to keep engine oil warm when the vehicle is sitting.

So what about drive through windows at fast food places? Folks here will sit in one for 15 min. rather than park and get out.
i like the double meaning. No car idling, and no idling period! Hey, you, stop idling, keep walking!
